Dandy Caramels

Ma Cusson Kitchen, Snack

Ingredients

2 cups granulated sugar

1 bottle dark Karo syrup

1 can condensed milk

6 oz butter

2 teaspoon vanilla

pinch of salt

Description

This recipe was given to Ma Cusson by Mrs. Hutchinson

Directions

Combine sugar and syrup in large kettle and bring to a slow boil
Add slowly, condensed milk; stir until well mixed and add butter slowly
Mix well and boil on very low burner until brittle when tried in cold water
Add vanilla
Pour into 9x12 buttered pan. Cook and cut in squares
Wrap in waxed paper

Notes

Another version of Mom and Dad's caramel recipe utilizes a candy thermometer to prevent burning and avoided the "until brittle" step.
